What Did You Watch This Weekend?

The Weekend Watch is an open thread where you can share what you’ve recently watched, offer suggestions on movies and TV shows we should check out (or warnings about stuff to avoid), and discover queue-filling goodies from other FSR readers.

The comments section awaits. I’ll get the ball rolling with the movies/TV my eyeballs took in this weekend.

This was pretty much a TV-only weekend for me, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. I started and stopped probably half a dozen movies, but nothing held my attention for longer than a few minutes. And yet I was able to watch several television episodes without a problem.

The latest Orphan Black is a step up in the smarts department from a week ago and some new revelations come to light, but the highlight of the episode is its incredible sense of humor. Seriously, it is a funny as hell hour of TV. My full thoughts are here, but in a nutshell the second season is continuing to offer up some seriously good entertainment. There’s a concern that the constantly increasing number of characters and subplots might grow unwieldy and topple the entire thing, but aside from the occasional bouts of stupidity the show’s writers seem to be on top of things.

Hannibal meanwhile finished out its second season with an episode that has me more than a little torn. It was a wonderfully-paced payoff for the Lecter vs Crawford fight that opened the season, and the aesthetics (both visual and aural) were fantastic. But how can three out of three FBI employees be so goddamn dumb? Fine, Will is excused as he’s a bit messed up in the head, but the other two showed a distressing lack of smarts.

While those are both current shows, I also spent time with two oldies but goodies. First up is The Bob Newhart Show by way of Shout! Factory’s new “Complete Series” box-set. I’ve seen the show before, but watching it from the beginning confirms Newhart’s comedic genius each and every single episode. The set includes a solid selection of special features, but it’s a shame they couldn’t also add in the final episode of his second sitcom, Newhart.

And finally, in the spirit of my recent first-time watch of The Godfather, I also started watching HBO’s The Wire. It’s been a long time coming obviously, but apparently I was just waiting for Amazon Prime to add this (and several other HBO gems) to their roster. The point is that I’m watching it now, and while I’m still in the first season its high degree of quality is already clear. And not for nothing, but episode four features a scene that quite possibly qualifies as the greatest thing ever. [Warning, this NSFW. Duh.]

Rob Hunter has been writing for Film School Rejects since before you were born, which is weird seeing as he's so damn young. He's our Chief Film Critic and Associate Editor and lists 'Broadcast News' as his favorite film of all time. Feel free to say hi if you see him on Twitter @FakeRobHunter.
