Just like the first frame and the final frame of a film can convey a sense of the overall narrative, so can the first and final appearance of a character. Where an arc begins absolutely determines where it will end, and in the process tells you a lot about the character in its own way. For example, think of Kurt Russell’s role in Quentin Tarantino’s DEATH PROOF. When we first encounter him, he’s leering lecherously at a group of lovely young ladies; the last time we see him, he’s getting his ass kicked by those same young ladies. From these two appearances only, the audience can determine that a) Russell is a practiced predator, and b) he picked the wrong damn prey this go around.
In a new compilation from Room 237 (nice name) the first and last appearance of characters from all of Tarantino’s films – in chronological order – are displayed side by side to give you a sense of their individual arcs. Spoiler: a lot of these characters make their final appearances dead, so if you haven’t seen up through THE HATEFUL EIGHT, maybe just watch with your cursor on the pause button.
