You might have heard that we now officially live in the future, or at least the future we imagined for ourselves in the 1980’s. This week Nike is rolling out the first pairs of self-lacing sneakers, as inspired, naturally, by those worn by Marty McFly in BACK TO THE FUTURE II. No word on hoverboards or flying cars, but we’ll take what we can get, I guess.

And while Marty’s kicks are certainly the most famous footwear in Hollywood history, they aren’t in that closet alone, as evidenced by this awesome and oddly-entertaining supercut from the esteemed Candice Drouet entitled, easily enough, “Sneakers in Movies.” But these just aren’t any sneakers, they’re a dozen of the most poignant and purposeful pairs, ones that don’t just look good but that enhance the story or the characters who wear them. Check it out and sound off in the comments which kicks are your favorite.
