IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA is some dark shit. There are jokes about death, race, crime, rape, incest, pedophilia, and scores of other unpleasant topics, not to mention most of the scenarios in which the gang finds itself entangled are typically entered, handled, and/or resolved by offensive, morally-questionable and often-illegal means. It’s funny as all get out, but if these people were real they would have been imprisoned long ago and most likely murdered while there.* But there’s a prevalent fan theory that takes things (somehow) to an even darker level. Stop me if you’ve heard this one: Dennis Reynolds (Glenn Howerton) is a secret, erotic serial killer.
It’s one of those things that once you hear it, it gets the ball rolling, and suddenly you’re recalling this scene and that scene and other one then another, and before you know it, you’ve got a fully-fleshed out fan theory backed by ample clips from the show, a brief but knowledgeable account of serial killing, types of serial killers, and famous serial killers, and a narrative to tie it all together into irrefutable proof that Dennis Reynolds is, in fact, the Ted Bundy of television. Or you do if you’re video essayist Ryan Hollinger, whose latest offering for his YouTube series “Ryan’s Theory” is entitled, “Is Dennis Reynolds a Serial Killer?”
This is fun and frightening all at once, and ridiculously thorough in the best possible way. It will make you a believer, or at the very least, it’ll make you laugh. Check it out, then for more of Hollinger’s work hit the link above.
* That actually has the makings of an ALWAYS SUNNY series finale, the anti-SEINFELD’s most anti-SEINFELD moment.
