Of all our interpersonal gestures – handshakes, head nods, eye contact, even sex* – nothing is quite as personal as a hug. A hug says “I love you” as clearly as it does “I need you,” it comforts as well as draws comfort, supports as well as needs support. A hug is a vulnerable thing, it is a strengthening thing, it is an empowering thing and it is the gesture we fall into when we have no power left. It is the purest physical expression of a parents’ love, or a child’s, or a friend’s. There is, in short, no more succinct way to express compassion, affection, affinity, and encouragement than a hug.

With that in mind, enjoy this supercut from Jose Rico of 50+ cinematic hugs (movies listed below) that represent the entire spectrum of human emotion without saying a word. Then go hug somebody, it’s good for you.

*After all, there’s no Tinder for hugging (though perhaps there should be), you don’t pick up a stranger in a bar (just) to hug, and there’s no such thing as casual hugging (though again, perhaps there should be).
