Sons of Anarchy, FX, Airs Wednesday 10/9c
Episode: “The Pull” (Season 1, Episode 8)
Synopsis: With the IRA gun payment looming, Samcro scrambles to come up with the cash; the Mayans and Nords take a drastic step toward strengthening their alliance; Jax finds himself in a dangerous position with Tara.
Review: Though it is hard to be sure, I believe it was this reviewer who predicted — in an almost Nostradamus-like fashion — that Sons of Anarchy would explode with action in the back half of the season. Through the first four episodes of the season the shows writing team, led by show-runner Kurt Sutter, expertly layered on some of the most tense drama that we’ve seen on television all year. And as promised, it has all come to a head this week in an episode so intense, it will have your knees shaking.
I am referring, of course, to an episode that pounds away with plenty of big reveals and crossed-paths, without giving it all away. Like the girl who stops you at third on Prom night but promises another date to ‘finish the job’ next week, Sons of Anarchy gave us all of the action that we were hoping for while still leaving a little bit left for next week. Most of the action came inside the bedroom of one Dr. Tara, played by Maggie Siff. And its not exactly the sort of action you’d have expected. Yes, that weird ATF Agent Kohn, played by Jay Karnes, comes back — and yes, it is possible for him to be more creepy. Beyond creepy. Over the edge, to be more precise. And his psychotic obsession with Tara brings this episode to a pretty epic climax, all done just right.
The thing that I am beginning to love — and yes, I said love — about this show is not just that it is the closest thing we will see to a contemporary western, but that every episode pulls back more of the layers of its infinitely interesting lead Jax, played by Charlie Hunnam. For Hunnam, this is the start of something big. And his chemistry with co-stars such as the aforementioned Siff and Ron Perlman is amazing — television may have found its new badass, a true rebel with a cause. His cause? To remain the intelligent, clear-headed future of SAMCRO — but with tensions rising and his need to protect Tara, as well as his newborn son, Jax is going to be tested. And I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to root for him next week, no matter how dirty things get.
Up Next Week: SAMCRO plans to retaliate against a rival biker club while dealing with a wounded Cameron Hayes in the clubhouse. Meanwhile, Jax, Bobby and Opie set out to put an end to the gun debt for good.
