Sons of Anarchy, FX, Airs Wednesday 10/9c
Episode: “AK-51” (Season 1, Episode 6)
Synopsis: A small favor for Pineys old war buddy turns into a big problem for Samcro. With Clay detained, Jax must step-up to handle the situation.
Review: Sure, I missed my weekly blogging assignment last week for Sons of Anarchy — shit happens. I did it in order to set myself up perfectly for this week’s episode, because ‘shit happens’ is the best way to describe what has begun to take place in what I like to call television’s best new series, drama or otherwise. Up until this point, we have seen quite a lot of build up — all of which have something to do with the relationships between Jax (Charlie Hunnam) and the people around him. Every one of the relationships has created some sort of tension, and if the first six episodes of the series have shown us anything, it is that Kurt Sutter and the writing staff of SOA know how to add layers to their show. Now it is about time to start peeling back some of season one’s layers and see some shit hit the fan.
In this week’s episode, a little bit of it does hit the fan, with federal agents, including the always creepy stalker Agent Cohn (Jay Karnes), sniffing around Samcro. And had it not been for Jax’s ingenuity, the entire crew would have been on their way to joining another club — the prison bitch brigade. As well, we see the return of Taryn Manning to the show, a development that creates some serious tension in the world of Gemma (Katey Sagal). In fact, it all but leads to one of the show’s more entertaining moments — a Gemma-Clay meltdown in the middle of the Charming police station. Manning’s character is one that I was hoping would return, as she helps keep eyes on the storyline of Kip “Half-Sack” Epps, played by Johnny Lewis, a character I feel is underused. The addition of Manning’s character Cherry to the show’s regular lineup could be a great one, should they choose to keep her around.
As much as this week’s episode took things up a notch, unfolding some of the previously built tension, it appears that next week’s episode could be one of the more explosive ones this season has seen. The situation between Tara, Jax and Agent Kohn is very near its boiling point, which could in turn create all sorts of issues for Samcro. As well, I would expect Jax’s protective nature to create more distance between Jax and Clay. But that is all for next week — for this week, we’ve got another solid episode of a series that is quickly speeding toward greatness under our belts.
Up Next Week: Jax finds out more details about why Agent Kohn has come to Charming, leading him toward a confrontation that could put both Tara and Samcro at risk.
