Episode: “The All Out Fall Out” (Season Five, Episode Three)
Synopsis: The gang starts to face the reality of their financial situation after a meeting with their accountant. In an effort to avoid declaring bankruptcy, Vince accepts $200k for an appearance at a Sweet Sixteen party. Eric’s day gets a bit brighter when the script by his two newest clients gets a positive response from another agent as well as Edward Norton. Ari meanwhile gets caught up in a battle with rival Adam Davies that quickly escalates out of control. Oh, and Turtle whines early on about sex.
Review: This episode is probably the most action oriented one of the series, and it’s all courtesy of Ari Gold. He receives a brand new Ferrari from his wife as an anniversary present, and almost immediately ends up in an illegal street race with rival Adam Davies. The feuding duo zoom through the streets, dodging traffic at high speeds until Ari finally comes to a stop by way of the back end of a school bus. The battle progresses throughout the episode culminating with Ari delivering the bitch slap heard round the world. Or at least throughout the agency’s office. Elsewhere, Vince’s empty bank account forces him to accept an offer to appear at a Sweet Sixteen party. All goes well until Drama, in a spiral of drunken depression resulting from his recent breakup, pukes on the birthday girl’s cake. We don’t find out if Vince was wise enough to get his check before the party… The whole affair is hit and miss as far as laughs are concerned (although Drama’s projectile vomit definitely ends it on a high note), but serves to drive home the point to him and the viewers that he’s really broke. Eric on the other hand seems to be heading in the right direction, as the script Vince and Ari passed on gets major interest from Edward Norton. They passed on the script initially because it was an independent film, but now Norton wants to turn it into a bigger and better studio film. Fans of last week’s finally fascinating dynamic between Vince, Eric, and Ari won’t see any of that on display here, but this script storyline seems to be setting up a nice confrontation with Eric and Amanda Daniels (Carla Gugino) on one side and Vince and Ari on the other. Next week promises to be meatier as a bidding war erupts and friendships may get tested. Oh, and Turtle will probably whine about sex.
Overall another average episode. Less drama and character work this week than last, but there is a strong setup for an upcoming clash. The only knock on the believability meter is the boys’ visit to a strip club. Not only do they bring in their own alcohol, therefore not ordering anything from the bar, but they also don’t engage the services of the strippers. I can’t imagine any establishment letting guys take up table space when they’re not paying for a single thing. Also worth noting is Jeremy Piven’s win at the Emmy Awards tonight. Was it ever in doubt? Although it is one more thing for Drama to complain about… Kevin Dillon was nominated in the same category.
