‘Transcendence’ Reveals Official Synopsis, Very Little About the Actual Plot

Apparently, being Christopher Nolan is contagious. The director’s 2010 film Inception was a twisty-turny science fiction epic shrouded in secrecy, and now Nolan is hard at work on the similarly twisty-turny Interstellar that’s similarly shrouded in secrecy.

Wally Pfister, Nolan’s longtime cinematographer, has apparently caught the Nolan bug. He too has a science fiction film coming out in 2014- Transcendence– and up until now there’s been very little word on what the film’s actually about. All we’ve had to go on was a brief summary that mentioned how Johnny Depp’s character will be assassinated, then turned into some kind of artificial intelligence.

Now, ScreenCrush has the official synopsis. Unfortunately, it doesn’t add a whole lot. Ready? Here it is:

“Will Caster, forefather of A.I., has his consciousness uploaded onto the internet. Once there, is it really Will who is interacting with humanity in order to make things better, or a darker sinister clone bent on the termination of the world as we know it?”

So yes, we will be seeing (or at least hearing) a computerized Depp. And now we know that robo-Depp will go awry in some way and threaten humanity’s very existence. Unless it’s not really robo-Depp, and instead is an evil clone, which may imply that the original version is out there somewhere. It’s hard to tell with a two-sentence synopsis.

This may raise more questions than it answers, but at least it’s something. Presumably, a trailer for Transcendence would clear things up, but any real information is most likely still a long ways away.

Ponder what exactly Transcendence is about while you stare into a newly-released behind-the-scenes photo over at The Film Stage.
