Edgar Wright’s latest looks as terrific as you’d expect.
Edgar Wright’s last film, 2013’s The World’s End, is among my favorites from the filmmaker, but we’ve waited long enough for a follow-up. We would have had one sooner of course had the dreaded “creative differences” not reared their ugly head between Wright and Marvel during pre-production of Ant-Man, but while that fiasco shaved a couple years off his filmography it may have been for the best.
He transitioned pretty quickly to an original project, Baby Driver, and it’s his first feature without a co-writer. It’s all Wright, beginning to end, and he brought together a mightily impressive cast to bring his creation to life. Ansel Elgort stars as a getaway driver working “one last job” alongside a crew that includes Jamie Foxx, Job Hamm, Jon Bernthal, and Kevin Spacey.
Two trailers for the summer release dropped today, and the best of the pair is the international one below.
Who needs Marvel?
Not that we expected anything less than awesome from Wright, but this looks… awesome. Wright’s eye for perfectly-crafted camera moves, editing, and musical cues are on full display here, and you know they’re only the tip of the energetic iceberg that’s near-guaranteed with Baby Driver. It’s especially impressive because the plot itself is so damn simple.
“A talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.”
That official synopsis tells us all we need to know, but when paired with the trailer it also reveals how a talented filmmaker can take a generic plot and turn it into something special. We’ll know in a few months if the movie itself delivers on this promise.
The stylish and restrained poster is below, and here’s the other trailer for those of you who want a bit more of a fix.
Baby Driver begins parking your ass in theaters on August 11th.
