Though it’s been almost 20 years since his death, Toshiro Mifune continues to be considered one of the most iconic actors of all-time. Best-remembered for his films with Akira Kurosawa – Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Yojimbo, Throne of Blood – Mifune was an action star with soul, and is revered as the best samurai actor ever. This year his amazing career is receiving tribute in the form of a documentary, Mifune: The Last Samurai, but in advance of that the late actor received another honor: a coveted star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Mifune’s grandson, the actor Rikiya Mifune, was on hand representing the family during the ceremony, which was held Monday in sunny Southern California. Mifune: The Last Samurai opens in the U.S. on December 2nd.
Marvel as a live-action company is divided into two houses: Marvel Studios, who produce the movies, and Marvel Entertainment, who focus on the television properties. For about a year now we’d been led to believe that squabbles between the two had nixed the idea of an Inhumans movie as was originally announced for phase four (July 21, 2019), and instead we got some characters tossed into the mix over on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which based on reviews and ratings assuaged absolutely no one’s jones for some royal-moon-family-adventures. But as of today, it seems like the route to an Inhumans project has been redrawn, and it’s now landing smack in the middle of where it was supposed to be and where it is.
Marvel Entertainment has announced that Inhumans is going to be a standalone project, but as a television show and not a film, though it is kinda getting a theatrical release. Let me explain: the first two episodes of the series are going to be shot on IMAX cameras for a theatrical premiere next September in advance of the series premiere on TV, which will have added and exclusive footage. And according to the press release, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Inhumans aren’t in the mix, or if they are, they aren’t the focus:
‘Marvel’s The Inhumans’ will explore the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family.
Of course, as this wouldn’t be the first Marvel series to go under before taking off – Marvel’s Most Wanted, an intended Agents spinoff featuring Mockingbird was given a pilot order before being scrapped – don’t count your chickens just yet. But in the meantime, does anyone else see Jon Hamm and Christina Hendricks having a small screen reunion as Black Bolt and Medusa?
For a while now we’ve known we were getting an FX limited series starring Tom Hardy called Taboo, we just didn’t know when. But now we do. The story of a British aristocrat (Hardy) stranded in Africa and thought dead who returns to London just in time to claim his inheritance is set to bow on January 10th, less than two months from now. The series comes from Hardy and Kristoffer Nyholm, the Danish director responsible for the hit series Forbrydelsin, which likely you know better by its American remake, AMC’s The Killing. There are eight episodes planned for Taboo, which co-stars Franka Potente (The Bourne Identity), Jonathan Pryce (Brazil), Stephen Graham (Boardwalk Empire), and Tom Hollander (The Night Manager).
