Real RocknRolla Becomes a Dark ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’

A real rocknrolla in Disney's The Sorcerer's Apprentice

If we can learn anything from Toby Kebbell being cast in Disney’s upcoming live-action Sorcerer’s Apprentice, it’s that a real Rocknrolla wants everything – sex, drugs and anthropomorphic dancing brooms. Although it seems like the heroine could have also provided that last bit.

Kebbell was last seen by mainstream audiences as Johnny Quid – the faked-dead, real-heroine addict in Guy Ritchie’s “return to form” flick. Next up, he’ll be seen tromping through the sands of time in Prince of Persia followed quickly by him donning a magician’s cap. According to Variety, Kebbell has joined the film, being directed by Jon Turtletaub, as Drake Stone (great name) – a character described as a famous magician who teams up with main bad guy, Alfred Molina’s Horvath, in order to achieve omnipotence or have the biggest ‘shroom hallucination or whatever evil wizards do. I assume Stone will have to battle Harry Potter at some point.

This is pretty cool news because, let’s face it, Kebbell is a pretty cool actor, and it’s great to see him continuing to get work in major productions like this. However, it’s likely that below Nic Cage, Alfred Molina, Jay Baruchel and Nic Cage’s Hair Piece, Kebbell will have to settle for fifth billing.

What do you think? Does this open the door for the whole movie to just be one big drug trip out? Wasn’t that an option before? What other parts of Fantasia should Disney adapt?
