‘TiMER’ Trailer Tells You When You’ll Find Your Soul Mate

I am as unapologetic in my enjoyment of romantic comedies as I am in proclaiming that the genre has become so infested with filth that we get festering films like Valentine’s Day forced upon us. In short, it’s insincere, unfunny schlock, so we’ve had to turn to the indie world more and more. That’s probably why 500 Days of Summer hit so hard – it was a quality film in a desert of bad.

TiMER features no major stars, doesn’t have a known director and wasn’t made through a studio. All of these things may be good things, especially because what the film does have going for it, is a killer premise. I’ll let the official synopsis explain:

What if a clock could count down to the moment you meet your soul mate? In this alternate version of present day Los Angeles, a revolutionary device called the TiMER fulfills this very fantasy. For a reasonable installation fee and a moderate monthly charge, a TiMER is implanted in the wrist and promises to accurately display the number of days, hours, minutes and seconds until the owner’s date with destiny. However, things aren’t so easy for Oona O’Leary (EMMA CAULFIELD, Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Oona faces the rare dilemma of a blank TiMER; her soul mate – whoever and wherever he is – doesn’t have a TiMER.

I love this premise for two reasons: it’s science fiction and it’s basically asking “What if you had to find the love of your life through the means that people currently do?” Since it’s set in the future, people have moved beyond the guesswork, but here in the present, I imagine we’ll find a lot with that search to relate to.

The film hit Tribeca last year, SITGES late last year, and is still playing the festival circuit rounds.
