On the one hand, Tim Burton directing an adaptation of a board game that is an adaptation of monster movies in general might be seen with incredible cynicism. Without looking into a crystal ball, you might already see the Gothic tones, the text reading “Starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter” plastering the poster, and you might already hear the same score from Danny Elfman.
On the other hand, a few small details might make you optimistic.
The first detail is that John August will be writing the screenplay. Considering Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this doesn’t automatically result in a home run, but August was also the scribe behind Big Fish which stood as a turning point creatively for Burton – one that he can’t seem to get back to after being lodged firmly in Johnny Depp’s rut.
The second detail is that Monsterpocalypse an action film, or at least it sounds like one. In /film’s interview with producer Roy Lee, he states that the movie sees humans battling a bunch of monsters, only to realize that they haven’t so much as defeated them as they’ve taken to hiding and calling for giant, even scarier back up.
Tim Burton isn’t known for doing action, and that might be another reason to raise an eyebrow or to have a little hope. After all, if his problem is constantly going back to the well, a good explosion or two might just shake him out of that.
