This Means War: McG Trades Action for Romance, and Action

After dispensing upon the world a movie (Terminator Salvation) that probably made James Cameron cry, sometimes not-so-bad director McG is heading to the world of formula action-comedy. And of course he’s bringing along his keen eye for telling the story of romance, with action.

This Mean War is set to star Bradley Cooper and Reese Witherspoon, says The Hollywood Reporter. The story will follow two best friends who are also spies that fall in love with the same woman (Witherspoon). As their friendship is tested, the two men turn the whole situation into a wicked spy shoot ’em up.

The wicked spy shoot ’em up I can understand from McG. The comedy element also makes sense, as the director once entertained us a bit with the Charlie’s Angels franchise. He will also be working from a script by Role Models writer Timothy Dowling, which is encouraging. In the end, this doesn’t actually sound like such a bad idea. It is certainly better than the idea of McG resurrecting the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea story, which Disney recently sacked. His action-comedy work has been his best thus far, even if that isn’t saying much.

I’m encouraged, but cautious.
