That’s right. Two Wolverine trailers have dropped, and they’ll both make you long for the Darren Aronofsky version that never was.
The international trailer has a bit more footage (including what appears to be a bar fight that gets pacified just when it’s about to get going), but both it and the domestic version are severely lacking in anything resembling energy or impressive action. That train fight near the end? Ersh. Flat, mopey line readings? It’s now down to blind optimism that this thing has any life to it.

The Wolverine hits theaters July 26th, so we won’t know until then whether the trailers are unfortunately accurate, but if the movie plays as poorly as its theoretically best clips do, the big question has got to be why Fox can’t manage to get this character right.
James Mangold was always an interesting choice for director, and even though we all got teased with the possibility of Aronofsky going mainstream, Mangold is certainly not a bad fall back. Even though its structure was a bit of a lost gamble, Knight and Day proved to have some solid action beats, and 3:10 to Yuma was a contemplative Western with plenty to love. Hope springs eternal here, but I’d wager a healthy part of my minuscule salary that Aronofsky couldn’t abide by the micromanaging being done for a movie this size at Fox. Mangold could, but it also means we’ll end up with a Wolverine made by committee.
