Things Get Apocalyptic In The First Trailer for The Final Season of ‘The Leftovers’

By  · Published on February 17th, 2017

Chaos reigns in a nihilistic first glimpse at the HBO series’ coda.

Not enough people have been watching The Leftovers since its first season premiered in 2014. The generosity of HBO and the power of cult fandom are to thank for it having lasted this long, while it seems the current state of world affairs have made the series’ approaching third and final season even more vital for viewers today. The network has just uploaded a brand new teaser trailer for the season, which you can watch below.

The new teaser abstains from giving us too many plot details, but it certainly hints at the mood and visual themes of its final ten episodes, and perhaps most interestingly, their geography – while the first season existed mostly within the pale gloom of suburban New York, the second season moved the action to the vibrant and almost folklore-esque universe of Jarden, Texas, and now the series is moving to the scorching desert vistas of Australia.

Unlike other HBO series, The Leftovers has retained most of its original cast since the pilot, even doubling in size with the second season’s addition of the Murphy family. It’s a welcome sight to see Kevin (Justin Theroux) and Nora (Carrie Coon) together again, even if they seem to be flying to Australia to avoid an alleged “worldwide flood”. Pastor Matt (Chris Eccleston) still can’t catch a break, as we see him struggling in multiple glimpses of his adventures down under. We also see characters who were missing from the first teaser (we’ve never been more unsettled by a Beach Boys song), such as Tommy (Chris Zylka), who seems to have followed his father’s footsteps and become a police officer.

Most comforting is that the teaser seems to promise that The Leftovers will remain focused on its themes of family, grief and religion. Crosses, congregations and worldwide catastrophe are seen in rapid flashes throughout; one can only hope the show continues to get weirder as it approaches its conclusion.

The Leftovers will return on April 16th – yes, Easter Sunday. Below are some of the most enticing shots from the teaser.
