Shot by Shot with ‘The Irishman’ Trailer

Check out a digitally de-aged Robert De Niro having the time of his life.

When it comes to movies about organized crime, Martin Scorsese is a master of the art form. For his latest, The Irishman, the director has assembled the Avengers of tough guy gangster actors to tell the dramatized story of Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro), a real-life mafia hitman who claimed responsibility for the mysterious death of Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino).

In true Scorsese form, the movie looks slick and full of humor, but we can expect it to go to some dark places given the murderous subject matter. That said, the cast of veteran actors are clearly having the most fun they’ve had in years, and while the digital de-aging technology takes some getting used to, it’s great to see these wiseguys sharing a screen together again.

Ahead of the film’s limited theater release in November, Netflix has dropped a new trailer for the crime opus. Watch it, get excited, then join me afterward as I break down some of the key scenes.

The Irishman

The trailer opens with Frank putting on his jewelry. In the world of organized crime, bad guys wear jewelry to present an image of wealth and success.

Here we see Frank driving a fancy vehicle, once again suggesting that he’s a man of wealth and taste.

Cut to the attorney Bill Bufalino (Ray Romano) looking over a file. He reveals that management can only fire drivers on “very specific charges” and begins to read them aloud.

Frank listens keenly, as this information clearly applies to him.

Frank reveals that he’s never late for work.

He doesn’t have any moving violations.
