Both Inside Out and Jurassic World are out this month, meaning it’s a great time to promote The Good Dinosaur, which is another Pixar movie being released this year and which also involves Jurassic beasts. Yes, Jurassic, even though the plot of this animated feature is set long after that geologic period. The main character is apparently an Apatosaurus, a dino species I believe only lived in that period, and that’s okay because the whole thing plays with history by taking place in a world where the asteroid never struck and never caused the extinction of the “terrible lizards.” Also, y’know toys and cars and fish and emotions can’t talk to one another.
Still, Pixar seems intent on explaining the alternate history of The Good Dinosaur in this first teaser trailer. That’s pretty much what the whole teaser is, in fact. And they’re pretty accurate showing Parasaurolophus as one of the last dino species that would have witnessed that fateful asteroid either crashing into Earth or passing the planet by. All this to make us believe in a story where a dinosaur protagonist (voiced by Lucas Neff) befriends a human cave-boy character. We’d have been fine with another make-believe world with dinos and people living at the same time. Maybe there’s another reason for the idea of having this movie be set in a “what if?” situation.
Here, it’s even stressed in the official synopsis from Pixar:
The Good Dinosaur asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.
We’ll find out more soon enough, I suppose. The Good Dinosaur, which is the feature directorial debut of animator Peter Sohn (Partly Cloudy), opens on November 25th.
