‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ Gets a Website Filled with Tattoos, Girls, and Reznor/Ross Score

Generally, the last thing in the entire marketing universe that interests me is an upcoming film’s website, but damned if Sony Pictures hasn’t conceived of a nifty site for their The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo English-language remake that isn’t packed with some fine material. The film already has enough to recommend it – it’s based on Stieg Larsson’s bestselling book series, it’s a stylish remake of a homegrown Swedish take on the material that few people saw stateside, and it combines the talents of director David Fincher and stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. Basically, you already know if you’re going to check this film out, but Sony isn’t sitting around counting painful piercings and bad tattoos until its release date – they’re coming for an audience with a surprisingly user-friendly site that may suck in people who’ve so far avoided the Dragon Tattoo phenomenon.

The site currently features only two clickable sections – one takes visitors to that teaser trailer that made everyone positively lose their shit back in June. Big news here – it still looks good. Moving on. The other section takes visitors to an extended “Characters” gallery that provides pictures and background information on every character in the film (at least, I hope that’s every character in the film, because this gallery already has me feverishly piecing together Venn diagrams and family trees to try to get all these people straight). This is what’s most interesting about the site – though it would be safe to assume that most people are already well-versed in these characters and their intertwining stories based on the success of the books alone, that’s simply not so. I’m a book nerd who has so far avoided Larsson’s series, but this new site has sparked my interest in the series’ three novels because the site has laid out the story and its characters in such an appealing and thorough way. And, hey, if you’re illiterate, you can still just wait to see the film. Also, hey, if you’re illiterate, you can’t read this, so who am I even talking to right now?

And, if you hang around on the site long enough, you’ll be treated to an extended listen to the film’s score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. No reading necessary. If the film is half as moody and ballsy as its badass teaser trailer and this slice of sound, Christmas will be oh-so-dark-and-bright this December.

Check out the site righ here.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens on December 21st.
