Everyone loves and hates lists. They reduce and compare movies that don’t deserve it, but they also celebrate greatness in a convenient, digestible form that can do a lot to encourage movie fans to discover new and old greats even better than long, drawn out columns can.
Time Out has decided to do the mother of all lists and chose to do it by going all out.
The publication sought out the opinions of 150 movie industry experts (ranging from acting to directing, to producing, to criticism) to pick the 100 best British movies.
It’s a formidable list, of course. Here’s 10–2:

- 7. Performance
- 6. A Matter of Life and Death
- 5. The Red Shoes
- 4. Kes
- 3. Distant Voices, Still Lives
- 2. The Third Man
You’ll have to check out the full list for yourself to find out what made the #1 spot. It’s a bold choice. A great movie, and something I’ve championed a lot, but it’s not one I would have expected to be voted the tip-top. Why?
Because it’s a horror film.
Ultimately, I could bask in the genius of this list all day. At any rate, it’s a bottom-line extensive guide for what movies need to hit our Netflix queue next. That goes for the flicks we haven’t seen and the ones we want to see again.
Now, I think I’ll go pop in my Criterion Red Shoes right now and get started.
