The Adjustment Bureau Trailer: Nice Hat, Matt Damon

Here comes another dour, science fiction infused love story. Alright, so those aren’t exactly running amok these days, are they. Which is perhaps the reason why George Nolfi’s directorial debut The Adjustment Bureau seems so interesting. Despite it’s rather pedestrian story of a man who meets a mysterious girl and falls in love with her, it also has a potentially interesting over-arching story about a secret organization that maintains order in people’s destinies. And this organization is led by Mad Men’s John Slattery. That alone is enough to make me want to see this film.

Nolfi, whose previous credits include writing The Bourne Ultimatum and Ocean’s Twelve, is familiar with writing for his star Matt Damon. And capable of giving Damon and co-star Emily Blunt plenty of space for their on-screen romance. He has also written good action. Whether or not he can direct good action remains to be seen. One thing is for sure: he’s no Paul Greengrass. Which, in the interest of epilepsy sufferers, is a good thing.

Watch the first trailer for The Adjustment Bureau below. The film will hit theaters on September 17, 2010. As you may recall, it also made our list of The 18 Must See Movies of Summer 2010 (before the release date was moved, of course).

Do we control our destiny, or do unseen forces manipulate us? Matt Damon stars in the thriller The Adjustment Bureau as a man who glimpses the future Fate has planned for him and realizes he wants something else. To get it, he must pursue the only woman he’s ever loved across, under and through the streets of modern-day New York.

On the brink of winning a seat in the U.S. Senate, ambitious politician David Norris (Damon) meets beautiful contemporary ballet dancer Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt) – a woman like none he’s ever known. But just as he realizes he’s falling for her, mysterious men conspire to keep the two apart.

David learns he is up against the agents of Fate itself – the men of The Adjustment Bureau – who will do everything in their considerable power to prevent David and Elise from being together. In the face of overwhelming odds, he must either let her go and accept a predetermined path…or risk everything to defy Fate and be with her.
