Sweet Baby Jesus, Sam Rockwell

After going big in Iron Man 2, Sam Rockwell is heading back to the world of indie film-making. At least that’s the word on the street. He’s currently considering a role in the indie comedy Sweet Baby Jesus, in which he would join Bette Midler, Kim Cattrall and pop star Pixie Lott in a comic retelling of the Christian Nativity. Yes, I meant to put those names together.

Deadline was the first on the scene, reporting that Rockwell is currently interested in the role of Joe, “a guy who finds himself accompanying his pregnant teenage girlfriend to Bethlehem, Maryland. His girlfriend’s name is Mary and soon the town is agog that it’s about to witness the Second Coming.”

What’s more interesting is that the story takes place during Christmas in the 1970s, and Joe and his lady Mary (played by Pixie Lott) are hippies. Sort of a Technicolor Dreamcoat meets Jesus Christ Superstar hippie revival sort of thing.

Peter Hewitt, director of Garfield, will helm the project with a script from Steve Blair. That’s not exactly a plus, considering that Hewitt’s other credits include Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey. However, stranger things have happened before. And Sam Rockwell isn’t a bad choice for any movie looking for a little life.

Just for reference, here’s a picture of Pixie Lott:
