What’s Next for the ‘Stranger Things’ Cast?

We don’t know when Season 4 will hit Netflix yet, but until then you can find the main cast members in other upcoming movies and shows.
Stranger Things Season

Another season of Stranger Things has come and left us with plenty to ponder. However, we might have to wait a while until our questions are answered. Season 3 left us with a cliffhanger that will have people talking for quite some time. But with no date as to when to expect the next chapter in the story, we’ll just have to be patient.

Naturally, though, fans of the show are going to miss seeing this ensemble cast in the one place. Most of the characters are compelling in their own way, and that’s because the actors have done a great job bringing them to life.

Still, until that day comes, they’ll be plying their trade elsewhere — so if you want to see what’s next for the main players involved, keep reading. Spoilers for season 3 follow.

Millie Bobby Brown

Next seen in Godzilla vs. Kong (March 13, 2020), Enola Holmes (release date TBA), and The Thing About Jellyfish (release date TBA).

Stranger Things has introduced us to several breakout stars, but Brown has seen her stock rise more than most of the young ensemble. Her performance as the telekinetic Eleven is one of the strongest on the show, which is why she’s been nominated for two Emmy’s, making her one of the youngest performers ever to be in contention for the prestigious awards.

Earlier this year, Brown also made her blockbuster debut in Legendary’s giant creature opus Godzilla: King of the Monsters as Madison Russell. While the film failed to achieve the success the studio was hoping for, her performance is still a lot of fun. In a movie where everyone just wants to see monsters beat the snot out of each other, Brown manages to make a human character feel worthwhile. I enjoyed it anyway, and I can’t wait to see her reprise her role in next year’s Godzilla vs. Kong.

Elsewhere, she’ll be playing the titular character in Enola Holmes, a film adaptation of the YA novels chronicling the mystery-solving exploits of the teenage sister of Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill). This movie is a big deal for Brown as she’ll be front and center, which will allow her to do most of the heavy lifting. If this one does the business at the box office, there’s also plenty of source material to mine for sequels.

Finally, she’ll play the lead in a film version of Ali Benjamin’s acclaimed children’s novel The Thing About Jellyfish. This will also see her play a detective of sorts, as the story revolves around her investigation of her friend’s suspicious death. She’s actually perfect for this role; it’s a story about the highs and lows of adolescence, which is a major theme of Stranger Things.

David Harbour

Next seen in Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein (July 16, 2019), Dhaka (release date TBA), and Black Widow (release date TBA).

Harbour is another performer whose profile skyrocketed after the show. His performance as the troubled hero Sheriff Hopper turned him into a strong fan favorite and has allowed him to showcase some excellent emotional range. He’s a believable everyman badass, but he’s also great when it comes to dry comedy and playing highly likable characters with an edge.

Fans who’re dying to see more Harbour won’t have long to wait, either. He returns to Netflix screens later this month in the awkwardly titled Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein, a mockumentary which sees the actor playing himself as he sets out to uncover footage from his dad’s lost televised stage play of the same name. This one will allow Harbour to embrace his comedic side, and his involvement is reason enough to believe that the actual film will be better than its title suggests.

On a more serious note, he’s also co-starring alongside Chris Hemsworth in Dhaka. Filmed from a script written by Joe Russo (one of the Avengers: Endgame directors), the story follows a mercenary who gets hired to retrieve a businessman’s kidnapped son. No release date has been specified at the time of writing, but IMDb says the film will be released this year. On paper, this one looks like a generic thriller, but the people involved are a talented bunch, so it’s bound to be entertaining.

After those movies, the Hellboy star will return to superhero fare in Cate Shortland’s Black Widow film. He’ll also be joined by a star-studded ensemble that includes Scarlett Johansson, Rachel Weisz, and rising superstar Florence Pugh. His role in the film is unknown at the moment, although he did say he’ll be playing a “thing.” Naturally, this has led some fans to speculate that his character is The Thing. If that’s the case, he’ll likely be part of the next iteration of the Fantastic Four.

Winona Ryder

Next seen in The Plot Against America (release date TBA).

Ryder’s only confirmed project is The Plot Against America, a six-part HBO miniseries based on a novel by Philip Roth. The show imagines an alternate American history where Franklin D. Roosevelt lost to Charles Lindbergh. Told through the eyes of a Jewish family, the story follows them as they witness the famous aviator become president and turn the nation towards fascism. Stranger Things gave Ryder a new lease of life on the small screen, and she seems content to focus on similar projects going forward.

Sadie Sink

Next seen in Eli (release date TBA) and Fear Street 2 (release date TBA).

Sink’s character, Max, is a beacon of light in the show’s underwhelming second season. Since then, she’s continued to shine, especially during the Season 3 scenes where she bonds with Eleven. Their budding friendship made for a welcome change of pace from the male-centric storylines of earlier seasons.

Unfortunately, Hollywood has yet to make the most of Sink’s undeniable star power. For the foreseeable future, she’s dedicating her time to the horror genre, but there hasn’t been much buzz surrounding the movies on her upcoming slate — at least not compared to projects starring Brown, et al.

Up first is Eli, which follows a boy who must find a way out of a haunted medical facility. Presumably, Sink plays one of the other patients. Either way, there hasn’t been much press surrounding this movie yet to know the extent of her part and what we can expect. For now, I’m just hoping it’s a strong outing for what seems like one of the countless movies about supernatural boogeyman haunting people in buildings.

Following Eli, she’ll appear in the more high-profile Fear Street 2, which is based on R.L. Stine’s YA horror book series. Here’s hoping that she gets a substantial part in this one, as it’s very much in her wheelhouse. This one will probably be quite fun if you’re a fan of spooky fare aimed at younger audiences, but I can’t help but feel there are more exciting projects than these movies in the young star’s future.

Finn Wolfhard

Next seen in The Goldfinch (September 13, 2019), IT: Chapter Two (September 6, 2019), Ghostbusters 2020 (July 10, 2020), and The Turning (January 24, 2020) — and heard in The Addams Family (October 11, 2019).

Wolfhard has been a busy guy outside of Stranger Things. In fact, he’s one of the main reasons why pop culture is obsessed with kid-centric horror fare set in the 1980s. In addition to the hit Netflix series, he’s also lent his talents to the IT franchise, the second chapter of which is releasing later this year.

That said, the young actor’s forthcoming resume is actually stacked with offerings that will continue to see him explore the darker side of entertainment. In October, he’ll voice Pugsley Addams in the animated The Addams Family feature. Then, in 2020, he’ll get his teeth sunk into a modernized remake of The Turn of the Screw titled The Turning, followed by the highly-anticipated sequel Ghostbusters 2020. All in all, Wolfhard is on his way to becoming a bankable horror star.

Outside of fright fare, he’ll appear in The Goldfinch, a drama about a young boy whose mother gets killed in a New York City terrorist attack. It’s not a horror movie per se, but it’s another movie that proves Wolfhard is attracted to interesting and intense material.
