First Trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Logan Lucky’ Introduces Daniel Craig

Yeah, we’re thinking he’s back.

Yeah, we’re thinking he’s back.

Did anyone actually believe Steven Soderbergh when he said he was retiring from film-making? He announced he was done directing feature films after the release of 2013’s Side Effects, and while The Knick kept him busy on television for a little while he’s finally ready to rescind that threat. This August sees the 54-year-old’s grand return with an ensemble heist comedy called Logan Lucky.

The film follows a pair of brothers played by Channing Tatum (Haywire) and Adam Driver (Paterson) who plan an elaborate robbery at the Coca-Cola 600 race with their sister (Riley Keough, (Mad Max: Fury Road). Their plan requires the help of an explosives expert, and they find just the professional in Joe Bang (Daniel Craig, Layer Cake). He’s also the first hiccup seeing as he’s currently incarcerated.

Check out the first trailer for Logan Lucky.

Well doesn’t this look like an absolute blast.

Soderbergh is no stranger to heist movies, but while his Ocean’s Eleven trilogy featured very smart crooks with unlimited resources his latest looks to scale back everything but the laughs. If anything, Logan Lucky seems ready to ramp up the comedy with plenty of mishaps, hijinks, and comically nuanced performances. Craig in particular appears to be truly enjoying this break both from serious cinema and from his James Bond persona, and I’m betting right now that he’ll be more than enough for us to forget/forgive that Seth MacFarlane (Hellboy II: The Golden Army) is in it too.

The supporting cast also includes Katie Holmes (Wonder Boys), Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant), Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Hilary Swank (Insomnia), Macon Blair (Blue Ruin), and Dwight Yoakam (Panic Room). As has been the case for most of his twenty three features he’s working from someone else’s script, and that someone is newcomer Rebecca Blunt who’s making her debut.

Logan Lucky races into theaters on August 18th.
