“Wait, so how many of us are there?”

Earlier this year, Sony announced that an incarnation of Spider-Man that isn’t Peter Parker would finally debut on the big screen and that the masterminds behind The LEGO Movie would be behind this new animated feature. In the pre-Spider-Man: Homecoming days of Peter Parker fatigue, this was some of the most exciting news to come out of Sony’s superhero camp. The first teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse dropped over the weekend. Watch it below.

In the action-packed, chilling teaser, there is a glimpse of Peter Parker’s headstone as a hoodied figure visits his grave. The trailer goes on to feature a new Spider-Man coming to terms with his abilities as a superhero, tentatively gripping walls and clumsily swinging between buildings. “Where more than one wears the mask” is the overarching theme of this first footage, and we see Spider-Man chasing a masked figure on a motorcycle through the crowded New York streets. But the story doesn’t just end after Spider-Man finally lifts his own mask and Miles is revealed underneath. The final shot in the trailer reveals two figures in Spidey suits and a radioactive spider on the wall.

Into the Spider-Verse features the voice-acting talents of Shameik Moore (Dope, The Get Down), Liev Schreiber, Mahershala Ali and Brian Tyree Henry. Developed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller — with Lord penning the script and additional story credits going to Alex Hirsch — the film will not be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover version of Spider-Man. I mean, that probably goes without saying, given that Tom Holland has made such a great impression as Peter in both his debut in Captain America: Civil War and the summer smash standalone Homecoming. No one is killing him off in any continuity anytime soon.

But the footage of Into the Spider-Verse looks promising in its youthfulness. The animation is crisp, vibrant and honestly plain fun, while still keeping within the typical tenets of Spidey storytelling that juggles the pressures of teenagehood, school life, and superheroism. If there’s anything we’ve learnt from superhero movies in 2017, it’s that the fun shouldn’t be neglected for story but go hand-in-hand to create the most relatable viewing experience possible. This formula led Homecoming and MCU movies like Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok to success and considering how hyped I am after watching that Into the Spider-Verse teaser, there’s hope for Sony’s newest Spidey addition yet.

Into the Spider-Verse is slated for release on December 14, 2018.
