There is no going back to simple super-heroics. Kevin Feige recently revealed that Spider-Man: Far From Home would signify the conclusion of Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I sorta dismissed him. After all, Ant-Man is technically the conclusion to Phase Two, and that film really didn’t connect to any of the plot mechanics surrounding that arc. However, based on this trailer, I tip my hat to Feige. Far From Home spins directly out of the events of Avengers: Endgame.
If you have not seen Endgame then what the heck are you doing watching this trailer let alone reading this breakdown? Of course, considering that the film has already crossed the $2 billion mark, I’m not sure there are many people out there that this warning applies to, but just in case, here’s Tom Holland with a grave warning. Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

Like, whoa. They weren’t fooling. Far From Home looks to take our hand and guide us through the trauma of Endgame. Tony Stark is gone. The Avengers saved us, but maybe they also caused a whole bunch of new problems in the process. That’s what Marvel characters do. They stick one finger in the leaky dike and another spout spurts forth. Everyone is in flux after the events of the latest cataclysm, and suddenly Peter Parker is the only available Avenger that Nick Fury can trust? Hmm… or at least he’s the only available Avenger that he can easily manipulate. Let’s jump in.
Tom Holland’s word of warning is appreciated and incredibly adorable. Marvel Studios does not want to ruin the experience of anyone who may have missed out on the first two weekends of Avengers: Endgame. We should not shame those who couldn’t’ make their lives work around the release schedule. I can not think of another film that required such action from a studio before. The MCU is cranking out their films too fast to protect the surprise of their other films that they still have in movie theaters. Makes things tricky on the marketing department, but they’re having fun with this insanity as well.
We open on Peter Parker still rocking the Iron Spider costume given to him by Tony Stark in Avengers: Infinity War. He wears his loss on his body. The suit is a terrible reminder of the sacrifice required to bring Parker back from the dusty void. Wearing the costume is a promise that he will live up to the courage and bravery Stark displayed in the final moments of his life. “Everywhere I go,” he says, “I see his face.”
Crouched on an NYC stoop, Parker stares mournfully at a mural of Iron Man. As we saw at the climax of the first Avengers, these heroes have become cultural icons. Just as we experience street artists throwing up images of Prince or Stan Lee when they die, images of Tony Stark spread across the globe. This trailer declares that Spider-Man: Far From Home will deal directly with the heartbreak of Avengers: Endgame. This is what the MCU does best. “I just really miss him.” We all do, kid.
“Yeah, I miss him, too.” With the Death of Tony Stark, Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) will take on the mission of his friend. Using the power and the money of Stark Industries, Hogan will walk in Tony’s footsteps. That means he also must be a mentor to Peter Parker. “I don’t think Tony would have done what he did if he didn’t know you were going to be here after he was gone.” Peter is now Hogan’s purpose.
Cut to the Iron Spider demolishing a bushel of gun-toting goons. With all those extra mechanical arms, Parker makes quick work of the bad guys. When he travels overseas later on in the trailer, the Iron Spider costume is replaced by the classic variety and his new stealth suit. Curious. More on that later.
The cops arrive on the scene, missing the superhero action. One of them asks Spidey, “You gonna be the next Iron Man now?” The wall-crawler responds, “Well, no, I don’t have enough time. I’m too busy doing your job.” Buuuurn.
He’s only kidding, guys! He’s taking a break from the friendly neighborhood anyway. Peter Parker hopes he can relax with a nice summer vacation, but that’s only because he still doesn’t realize that being Spider-Man is a full-time gig. The balance between Peter Parker and Spider-Man will always (and should always) be a struggle.
