Jennifer Connelly has been attached to star.
All aboard! TNT has ordered a full Snowpiercer series. The show has been in the works for a while, but now TV Line confirms that a 10-episode series will be produced with Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind) and Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) slated to star.
Based on the 2013 dystopian film by Bong Joon-ho (Okja, The Host), the premise of Snowpiercer involves a train that is powered by constant motion as it carries the remaining citizens of the world while the elements around them have frozen in an ice age. Snowpiercer primarily tackles social injustice aboard the train that never stops. Wealthy passengers are afforded luxuries and space in the front cars, and squalid conditions are the norm towards the back of the train. It’s the classic story of the proletariat attempting to overthrow the elite, with the added suspenseful caveat of it being only set on a train with an implication that the outside world is simply unlivable.
Sarah Aubrey, EVP of original programming at TNT, said, “I’m a personal fan of Bong Joon-ho’s epic film, and jumped at the chance to honor his original vision, yet expand upon the world and characters with a diverse, award-winning cast. Science fiction is the perfect genre to examine issues of race, class, gender and natural resources with thought-provoking and exciting storytelling. Snowpiercer will explore those relevant issues while embarking on a wild, action-filled ride.”
There’s no telling how similar both versions of Snowpiercer will end up being just yet, but I wouldn’t be mad if Connelly filled Tilda Swinton’s shoes. Diggs is a highly promising up and coming actor who’d do fantastically in Chris Evans’ role. But of course, it’s a reach to even think the show will necessarily be a replica of Bong’s film. The Snowpiercer pilot was written by Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) and directed by Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange), but no showrunner has been announced just yet.
