Update: Now there’s a full Sinister 2 trailer to give you the willies:
Sinister 2 is the offspring of two of our favorite horror films of 2012. It’s a sequel to Sinister, the Scott Derrickson-directed movie with an intelligent spin on the otherwise overdone found-footage trope, and it’s got some new blood taking over the helm this time in Ciaran Foy — he made the creepy, SXSW Audience Award-winning Citadel. We therefore must have some level of anticipation for the follow-up, even if (or especially since, depending on your tastes) we now get Shannyn Sossamon as the movie’s lead in place of Ethan Hawke.
The first teaser is a mere 16 seconds, hardly anything to go overboard about. There are some Children of the Corn, a deadly scythe, some more great footage made to look like old Super 8 home movies and I do believe there’s a glimpse of James Ransone, who reprises his role as Deputy So & So. Sossamon is there, too, playing a single mom who has just moved into an old farmhouse with twin sons (Robert and Dartanian Sloan) . Presumably after living in the same house from the first movie. If we did know more, we couldn’t divulge it, or the spirit of Buhguul (Nicholas King, also returning from the original) would kill us and our whole families.
Fans of the first Sinister will be happy to know that the script is co-written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, both from the original, plus real-life paranormal investigator and award-winning author Neal Parks, who was thanked in the original’s credits. An addition I’m happy about for this installment is a score by tomandandy, who previously composed music for both Citadel and Sossamon’s best movie, The Rules of Attraction. The sequel is of course again produced by Jason Blum, whose company, Blumhouse Productions, presented this teaser this weekend at WonderCon in San Francisco.
Sinister 2 opens in theaters on August 21, 2015.
