Short Film: Simon Christen’s Stunning Time-lapse Floating City in ‘Adrift’

Why Watch? Simon Christen woke up at 5am so that you don’t have to. He woke up at 5am a lot, for two years, trying to catch the most impressive moments of early morning fog in the Marin Headlands north of San Francisco. The result of all that admirable early rising is this short, the most impressive shots of Christen’s long-term project seamlessly edited together into four minutes of breathtaking mist.

Adrift is a film of careful counterpoint. The Golden Gate Bridge is front and center, of course, standing tall above the bay with an air of steadfast grandeur. Yet the star is the fog itself, and through it the passage of time. Christen matches the rushing, time-lapsed sweeping of clouds across San Francisco Bay with an ambient, contemplative track from Jimmy LaValle, of The Album Leaf. It feels like waking up at the crack of dawn, with all of the gorgeous purples in the sky and none of the irritating sleep in your eyes.

What Will It Cost? About 4 minutes.
