For all of the years that it was on television and through the very long-awaited first film, Sex and the City has always been about just that – sex, meaning what two lonely people do after heavy doses of alcohol. And the city, meaning New York. And while Sex and the City 2 appears to begin in the city, where Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her three best friends are dealing with the pitfalls of upper class urban life, it also clearly takes a turn toward the Middle East. To get away from all of the wild sex, Central Park penthouses and lush accommodations of their regular lives, the girls take a trip to Abu Dhabi. Because clearly that’s where you’d go if you just needed to get away from New York’s upper crust.
All sarcasm aside (and there was a bit of it in that first paragraph), I can’t see any failure in the future for Michael Patrick King’s sequel. The fan base is still there and is likely readying their little black dresses for opening night. And no matter the setting, the story of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda will always draw a crowd. That, and the first film wasn’t unbearable – so it’s likely that this one will follow suit.
Sex and the City 2 is in theaters May 27, 2010. The theatrical trailer is below.
