Reynolds will play the electric-rodent that also happens to be a detective.

Ryan Reynolds has played plenty of different roles in his day. From Green Lantern, a restaurant employee with a lot of flair, Van Wilder, and Deadpool among others. Given his ability to just slip into roles as Deadpool, perhaps it just makes sense that he would sign up to play Pikachu.

Detective Pikachu is one of those projects that just looks fake on paper. The movie is from Legendary Pictures and features the world famous Pokemon, Pikachu, as a detective solving mysteries. Pokemon is the world-famous video game that has crossed into many different mediums including card games, movies, television shows and more. Certainly, everyone remembers when Pokemon Go took the world by storm one year ago. Reynolds will be joining actor Justice Smith, who will be seen in the upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is directing the project that is supposed to start shooting in mid-January.

Apparently, Detective Pikachu is another attempt is spin the franchise to another direction. There is no Pokemon as universally known as Pikachu so it makes sense to use it try other things. There was a game for Detective Pikachu released in Japan in 2016 that hasn’t been released stateside yet. The Hollywood Reporter says that the plot for the film will be  “kicked into gear when Smith’s character’s father is kidnapped, forcing the teen to team up with Pikachu in order to find him. [Big Little Lies actress Kathryn] Newton is a sassy journalist who helps them on their quest.”

Legendary has big hopes for the project that will be a live-action CGI hybrid. There is no questioning the popularity of Pokemon and Pikachu so it has that going for it. Plus there is just a built-in curiosity into what direction this project will actually take. Is it going to go all in and take the story of Detective Pikachu seriously or it will be a comedy of some sorts? We’ll just have to wait and see what they have in mind.
