Romero Plays a Game of ‘Zombie Survivor’ in New Film

George Romero takes on Island Zombies

We’re only a few weeks from Halloween and who better to get some ghoulish buzz going than director George Romero, who is beginning production on an untitled zombie film.

The King of the undead who brought us Night of the Living Dead, according to Variety, began shooting this week in Ontario on a new zombie thriller. The story is about members on an isolated island (is there any other kind in a thriller?) off the North American coast who find their relatives rising from the grave and hungry for their families. The island leaders must decide if they should kill their resurrected relatives or lock them up until they find a cure.

The family dynamic has always been one of the most interesting conflicts in the zombie genre for me. How tough would it be to kill your mother if she turned? Props to Romero for focusing on this. Now if they have a scene where a zombie attacks an obese sibling to The Hollies’ “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother,” I will lose it.

The cast features Alan Van Sprang (Diary of the Dead, Land of the Dead), Kenneth Welsh, Kathleen Munroe, Devon Bostick, Richard Fitzpatrick, Stefano Colacitti, and Athena Karkanis.

What do you think of George Romero’s new film? What is your favorite zombie flick?
