Man, this cackling jackhole. The Emperor (Ian McDiarmid). A.K.A. Darth Sidious. A.K.A. The Energizer Bunny. He takes a licking (i.e., being chucked down a Death Star chasm by his best pupil) and keeps on ticking. This moment from Return of the Jedi sees him at his most smug, and I love imagining his screaming howl when Vader grabs him by the waist before his extreme plummet. Never thought we would have to worry about his wrinkly grin again, but oh well. What can be trashed before can be trashed again. This time, let’s Darth Maul him and toss his pieces in the lava pits of Mustafar.

Luke turns to face the camera and his father on the moon of Endor. We hear his dialogue from The Last Jedi, “We’ve passed on all we know.” Every life has steered Rey and her Resistance to this point in time. The actions of Anakin, Qui-Gon, Han, Leia, Old Ben, Mace Windu, and billions more have steered Rey to her showdown with the Dark Side and whatever vessel it might ultimately pilot.

Watching the montage collected from the prequels reminds you that it wasn’t all bad. Remove the awkward dialogue, a few shoddy performances, and the sterile bluescreen backgrounds, and you’ve got the basis for at least two really rad cartoon shows. AND! There is no denying the badassery of Darth Maul and his duel lightsaber. Clearly, the design made an impression of Abrams.

Episode VIII Luke finishes his thought as Mace Windu prepares his botched strike against Darth Sideous in Revenge of the Sith, “A thousand generations live in you now.” The past is the past. There is no changing it. Luke’s only hope is that the children of history have learned from it.

Anakin lost himself. His humanity melted away to be replaced by cold machinery.

Ben Solo lost himself. His anger transformed into an idol-worshiping tool of Supreme Leader Snoke. He did not learn the lessons of Anakin Skywalker, and he was failed by Luke.
