Spring break just comes earlier and earlier every year, doesn’t it? Wait, no, that’s Spring Breakers that comes earlier, as Harmony Korine’s nutty-crazy, pretty lady-starring, whatever-the-hell-this-is film has now moved up a week due to popular demand. Normally, we’d scoff at the concept of movie-going audiences demanding that a new film from indie auteur Korine hit theaters ASAP, but all bets are already off when it comes to Spring Breakers so, yeah, we’re going to bite on this one. What else has gotten an official date this week? Well, nothing nearly as titillating, but there’s some solid variety here, including The East, Vampire Academy, and a new animated outing.

Spring Breakers
The release date: Because no one on Earth can possibly wait any longer to see Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, A24 and Annapurna Pictures have moved the film up (sadly, just one measly week, but we’ll take what we can get) to a limited release on March 15th. The film will expand on March 22nd.
Previous date: March 22nd.
Why? Because you effing demanded it.
Currently slated for that date? The Call, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, From Up on Poppy Hill, Ginger & Rosa, Reality, and Upside Down (on the 15th); Admission, The Croods, Olympus Has Fallen, Gimme the Loot, Love and Honor, No Place on Earth, The Sapphires, and an On the Road expansion (on the 22nd).
The East
The release date: Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling’s Sound of My Voice follow-up (which bowed at Sundance last month, and which I loved) has long been rumored to have a May release date from Fox Searchlight, and the studio has gone ahead and dated its limited release for May 31st. There’s no word yet on expansion, but that should be following.
Previous date: None.
Why? Fox Searchlight released SOMV last April, but a crowded release date slate (seriously, twenty films opened that week, and most of them were also indie limited releases) didn’t help the film get the notice it deserved. Placing their next film in a more summery slot with less (current) competition can only help. Besides, the studio can also launch a more aggressive marketing campaign for the film, focusing on its thriller aspects, that audiences will be hungry for once the temperatures start going up. Also, everyone will have seen Fast & Furious 6 the week before and those ticket-buying dollars have to go somewhere.
Currently slated for that date? Universal’s Ethan Hawke-starring The Purge.
Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters
The release date: February 14, 2014.
Previous date: None.
Why? Because fans of vampires, academies, vampire academies, and YA trifles need something fun to watch on the world’s worst Hallmark holiday.
Currently slated for that date? About Last Night and The Maze Runner.
Untitled Illumination Entertainment Project
The release date: July 3, 2015.
Previous date: None.
Why? While the last Illumination project to be announced was their new How The Grinch Stole Christmas, opening that film in the dead heat of summer seems insane, so who knows what this could be. A surprise! In Hollywood! How fun!
Currently slated for that date? Nothing else, but Pirates of the Caribbean 5 (insert loud raspberry-blowing here) will pull into port the week after, and Sony’s The Smurfs 3 is set to blue itself on July 24th.
