Release Date Round-Up: Jack Ryan For Christmas, ‘Promised Land’ for Awards Season, and More

By  · Published on August 27th, 2012

Oh, hello there. You like movies, right? And seeing them, correct? Then what could possibly be more pertinent to your interests than knowing when not one, not two, not even seven, but a full fifteen movies are slated to hit a theater near you? What if I told you that three of them (not as impressive as fifteen, and for that we apologize) would be hitting your local multiplex this year? You simply wouldn’t believe your good fortune, would you?

What if I told you that you’ll be getting Chris Pine for Christmas next year? Sold now, aren’t you? And with that, let’s dive into another installment of Release Date Round-Up, this time featuring Pine, 3D dinosaurs, and Melissa McCarthy ruining Jason Bateman’s life.

Jack Ryan (Or Jack Ryan Film That We’re All Still Just Calling Jack Ryan)

The release date: As previously promised, the Chris Pine-starrer will arrive late in 2013, as it’s slated to hit theaters on December 25, 2013. Ho ho ho.

Previous date: None.

Why? Jeez, how long have we been thinking about this new Jack Ryan tale? This mother needed a date, and what better time than over a year from now, on a big date with little competition. Oddly enough, Paramount had previously dated all four of its earlier Jack Ryan properties in the summer (except for The Hunt for Red October, which opened in March). What this date establishes is a faith that the property can appeal to a wide range of holiday-hungry moviegoers and potentially have some awards buzz on it. I mean, if they could just get the thing filmed.

Currently slated for that date? The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, 47 Ronin (yeah, sure).

Promised Land

The release date: December 28th, smack in the middle of awards season.

Previous date: None.

Why? Now this is some fucking counter-programming. A Gus Van Sant up against a Tarantino and two family-centric chucklefests during Christmas week? Whichever studio cog came up with this date deserves a raise.

Currently slated for that date? Django Unchained, The Guilt Trip, Parental Guidance.

A Late Quartet

The release date: November 2nd.

Previous date: None.

Why? The older set needs movies, too.

Currently slated for that date? Flight, The Man With the Iron Fists, Wreck-It Ralph, Jack and Diane, This Must Be the Place.

Not Fade Away

The release date: November 2nd.

Previous date: October 19th.

Why? This is certainly a head-scratcher ‐ why move a film away from an early autumn release date with comparable running mates to an arguably somewhat more stacked date that also removes potential buzz from a New York Film Festival premiere?

Currently slated for that date? Jack Reacher, Monsters, Inc. (3D re-release), This Is 40, Zero Dark Thirty.

47 Ronin

The release date: December 25, 2013.

Previous date: February 8, 2013.

Why? Wait, are we even comfortable thinking that this film has even been made?

Currently slated for that date? Jack Ryan, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

Identity Thief

The release date: February 2, 2013.

Previous date: May 10, 2013.

Why? Yes, please fill the February dead zone with something that might actually be funny.

Currently slated for that date? Bitter Pill, Safe Haven.

Jurassic Park (3D)

The release date: April 5, 2013.

Previous date: July 19, 2013.

Why? People need those big, screen-busting dinosaurs now more than ever. Also, more 3D screens available.

Currently slated for that date? Dead Man Down, The Heat.

And we’ve also got a slew of newly-announced dates for some projects so far in the future that a few of them don’t even have names yet.

Untitled DreamWorks Animation Project
