Once a Ballerina, Now a Spy.

Other than mother!, Jennifer Lawrence has plenty of projects in the pipeline. One those movies have her teaming up once again with director Francis Lawrence, who was her director during three Hunger Games movies. Red Sparrow sees Lawrence playing Russian Dominika, a ballerina turned assassin for the government. For those waiting for the Black Widow origin story, this might be the closest we get.

The novel for Red Sparrow was written by Jason Matthews and follows Dominika through her dancing days into the twisted web of spies. Select women are brought into a training facility known as the Sparrow School. In this school, the women learn how to use their bodies in all fashions. Similar to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Red Sparrow has a branching storyline that follows an American operative who is trying to retrieve new information from the Russians. This CIA operative played by Joel Edgerton has his own goals to accomplish while in Russia and his path will cross the deadly female agent. Red Sparrow was originally supposed to be directed by Darren Aronofsky, so it would seem ironic that it is starting its marketing campaign during the rollout for mother! Red Sparrow is also not going to shy away from its graphic story with Francis Lawrence declaring to press “It’s definitely R.” He continued, “When I read the book and I made the pitch to the studio about what the approach would be, this was a definite R. Nobody’s chickened out or got cold feet, everybody’s gone for it from the beginning. It’s a hard R.” The Jennifer Lawrence thriller Red Sparrow co-stars Jeremy Irons, Matthias Schoenaerts, Mary-Louise Parker and Charlotte Rampling. It opens March 2nd, 2018.
