It’s described as Ernie Cline’s “holy grail of pop culture.” Enter the virtual world of ‘Ready Player One.’

Imagine a world in which Columbus, Ohio is a post-digital era wasteland. People live in towering stacks of apartments and their lives, if they are to have meaning, are lived mostly in the virtual world. Sounds pretty cool, right? That’s the premise behind Ready Player One, the pop culture-soaked upcoming film from Steven Spielberg. Based on a novel from Ernie Cline, noted DeLorean owner and brain behind the Star Wars fandom film FanboysReady Player One tells the story of a young man (Tye Sheridan) trying to navigate The OASIS, a virtual gamescape run by an 80s-obsessed technocrat (Mark Rylance), in order to win the ultimate prize and escape his desolate reality.

The film will co-star Olivia Cooke, Simon Pegg, Ben Mendelsohn, and T.J. Miller, among others. But most importantly, it will be populated by references to pop culture mainstays like The Iron Giant, Akira, Monty Python, War Games, Back to the Future, and more.

Here’s the first trailer, which debuted to a hall of hungry pop culture obsessives at Comic-Con earlier today. Ready Player One is due in theaters March 30, 2018.
