No, you aren’t hallucinating. Pottersville is a thing that is happening.
Everyone will remember where they were when they first realized Pottersville is a real movie and not a joke. Honestly, I wasn’t sure if it was a rip-off of Harry Potter or a sequel to It’s A Wonderful Life when I heard about it. The reason that this film is interesting is that it has highly recognizable cast.
Multiple time Oscars nominee, Michael Shannon stars as Maynard, a beloved businessman who is mistaken as Bigfoot. Apparently, he had one too many drinks and someone thought his gorilla outfit was the creature of legend. Now Maynard’s small town is the center of an international Bigfoot craze and tourism brings big dollars to the small town in dire need.
Did I mention that Pottersville is apparently a Christmas movie? Very little about the promotion of the film or subject matter would clue audiences into that detail. Luckily, movie posters exist where they can just photoshop a Santa hat onto one of the cast members. Speaking of the cast, Michael Shannon isn’t the only notable actor that has signed up for this movie. Pottersville also features Christina Hendricks, Ian McShane, Judy Greer, Ron Pearlman, and Thomas Lennon. Perhaps everyone owes Ron Pearlman a favor since he has apparently produced Pottersville.
The trailer makes extremely little sense, but there are obvious references to better movies. Ian McShane is doing his best Quint impression scratching his nails across a tiny chalkboard. There’s also a scene where Thomas Lennon is running away from what he presumes to be Bigfoot that kind of looks like a found-footage film mixed with the font from Aronofsky’s mother! Although Pottersville is definitely supposed to be a Christmas comedy.
Sometimes there just aren’t enough words to describe what gets made in this day and age. Pottersville might just be a gem for those who love bad movies.
