We’re excited every year for September to roll around because in addition to kids being back in school where they belong the month also means Fantastic Fest! It’s one of our favorite fests for several reasons, but chief among them is the most important thing at any film festival — the films. Every year the fine programmers at the Alamo Drafthouse gather up an eclectic grouping of titles from around the world covering the genre gamut from horror to comedy to drama suspense to movies that sometimes defy quantification, and 2019 is looking to be no different.
The previously announced first wave of titles was already more than enough to leave us jonesing with new movies from Takashi Miike, Taika Waititi, Brad Anderson, Vincenzo Natali, and more ready to play the fest, and now the second wave is here with even more cinema goodness. Bong Joon-ho‘s Parasite — my current favorite film of the year — will play alongside Rian Johnson‘s fun-looking murder mystery Knives Out. Richard Stanley returns after a hiatus with his Nicolas Cage-starring H.P. Lovecraft adaptation Color Out of Space, Joe Begos will be on hand with two new films (Bliss and VFW), and the filmmaking duo of Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead return with the latest movie Synchronic.
