Not One, But Two ‘REC’ Sequels In the Works

It’s been a rough few days around the FSR Headquarters. Bad news abounded ‐ from hack writers getting projects they can’t handle to sequels to beloved comedies being shot down, but here’s the silver lining for the day.

According to Variety, Filmax is planning on delivering two new installments to their maddeningly frightening REC franchise. The question is whether or not we’re all brave enough to go back into that damned apartment house again.

The most interesting aspect of the projects is that co-directors Paco Plaza and Jaume Balaguero plan on splitting up the tasks this time around with Plaza taking on [REC] Genesis and Balaguero taking on [REC] Apocalypse.

I have to admit I’m less interested in the origins of the virus, but I’m on board for anything these two want to create (whether it’s in the REC universe or not). It’s clear that they both have a strong talent for creating atmosphere and unraveling a plot that’s tightly wound and soaked in blood.

Mark your calendar. Spain is getting the films Fall 2011 and Spring of 2012. No telling when they’ll float their way over to the States, though. Let’s hope it’s soon.

And I think I just found out what Fantastic Fest 2011 will be showing.

What do you think?
