From modern classics to new curiosities, Hulu has movies for you.

Hulu has been stuck in the third place position when it comes to movie streaming behind Netflix and Amazon Prime because most people still see them strictly as a home for next-day television. They have movies too, though, and more than a few of them are gems that make Hulu a destination beyond last night’s TV shows.

The complete list of new movies hitting Hulu this month — June 2019 — is below, but I wanted to highlight the best of the bunch along with several others worth seeking out.

Hulu Pick of the Month

There aren’t many movies I loved as a kid that not only hold up but also become even better to my adult eyes, but Carroll Ballard’s The Black Stallion (1979) is one of the exceptions. The film is effortlessly beautiful from beginning to end with its tale of a boy who survives a shipwreck only to be stranded on a desert island with a wild horse. The bond they form is given time to breathe and grow into one of the screen’s most realized and affecting friendships, and Ballard gives his characters the gift of trust too as they’re allowed to exist in silence. Long stretches of the film go without dialogue, and it’s just the most engrossing experience. This is a film worth owning on glorious Blu-ray, but barring that it’s an essential watch period — so make it a Hulu night and enjoy perfection.

Solid Thrillers You Might Have Missed

The Presidio

There are so many great movies each year that it’s easy to let some pass you by, so please allow me to highlight two smaller films that should appeal to thriller fans. The Presidio (1988) is an unassuming little film that simply oozes the late 80s starting with a lead couple played by Mark Harmon and Meg Ryan. They’re joined by Sean Connery in this San Francisco-set thriller featuring murder, conspiracy, and one of the all-time great movie foot chases. Switchback (1997) stars Ryan’s ex-husband Dennis Quaid alongside an absolutely killer supporting cast including Danny Glover, R. Lee Ermey, Walton Goggins, Ted Levine, William Fichtner, and a pre-obnoxiousness Jared Leto. Quaid stars as an FBI agent pursuing a serial killer who’s abducted his son, and while it’s a slow-burn, it’s a good one.

Cartoon Fun

Regular Show

Some times you just want some animated madness, and if that time is June, then Hulu has something to fit the bill. New episodes of Regular Show arrive on June 13th, and it’s the perfect opportunity to catch up on one of the finest workplace comedies going before its eighth and final season premieres on Cartoon Network this fall. Rick and Morty‘s complete season 2 teleports onto Hulu starting June 26th for those of you who are still behind and those of you who are happy re-watching cartoon brilliance.
