What’s New to Stream on Hulu for September 2019

Hotel Mumbai
By  · Published on September 1st, 2019

Hulu has been stuck in the third place position when it comes to movie streaming behind Netflix and Amazon Prime because most people still see them strictly as a home for next-day television. They have movies too, though, and more than a few of them are gems that make Hulu a destination beyond last night’s TV shows.

The complete list of new movies and shows hitting Hulu this month — September 2019 — is below, but I wanted to highlight the best of the bunch along with several others worth seeking out.

Hulu Pick of the Month

Movies about real-life terrorist attacks — or even ones designed to play on viewer fears of what could happen — have to walk a fine line to avoid falling into exploitation territory. Well, sometimes that’s the goal, but more serious fare strives for more responsibility. Paul Greengrass’ United 93 (2006) set a high bar, but Hotel Mumbai (2019) surpasses it by honoring the victims and heroes equally while also delivering a harrowing descent into hell. It’s an intense, surprising, and heart-breaking watch, and it’s terrifying enough to have earned a spot on my list of this year’s best horror movies.

Buckle Up for Space Shenanigans

Aniara

In space, no one can see what you’re watching on Hulu. That means you can give Stephen Hopkins’ big-screen reboot of Lost in Space (1998) a spin without feeling guilty or embarrassed. Is it great? Nope, but there’s fun to be had with a cast that includes Gary Oldman, Matt LeBlanc, William Hurt, Heather Graham, and more. If you can only watch one space-set movie this month, though, then your best bet is Aniara (2019) which arrives on the 19th. It’s one of the year’s best films, period, and follows the misfortune of a passenger spaceship that gets knocked off course on a routine journey. The result is a nightmare that shifts from haunting to blackly comic to thrilling to the most cosmic of horrors.

Past Masterpieces!

Best Comedy Movies Breaking Away

New movies are great, but sometimes “new to you” films are even better, so why not give these three gems from years past a watch? Breaking Away (1979) is a heartwarming and hilarious tale of small town players and big world dreams. It’s also one of the best sports movies out there. If you’re looking for laughs with a side of murder, mayhem, and cannibalism then you need to watch Ravenous (1999). Hell, you need to watch it regardless as the film is a perfect slice of 1800s madness. Lastly, while I know it stars the vocal talents of Johnny Depp who we all hate now, Rango (2011) arrives on the 28th and is a fantastic western despite also being an animated film.
