What’s New to Stream on Hulu for February 2020

Can a series adaptation of ‘High Fidelity’ succeed as well as the film from 2000? We certainly hope so.
Hulu February

Hulu has been stuck in the third-place position when it comes to movie streaming behind Netflix and Amazon Prime because most people still see them strictly as a home for next-day television. They have movies too, though, and more than a few of them are gems that make Hulu a destination beyond last night’s TV shows.

The complete list of new movies and shows hitting Hulu this month — February 2020 — is below, but I wanted to highlight the best of the bunch along with several others worth seeking out.

Hulu Pick of the Month

High Fidelity Hulu

Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel High Fidelity has been adapted once before into the fantastic film starring John Cusack, Tim Robbins, and Lisa Bonet, and it remains perfection outside of the ending in which the lead gets the girl he absolutely doesn’t deserve. Hulu’s latest original project is a series adaptation of High Fidelity that swaps the lead character’s gender and casts Zoe Kravitz — Bonet’s daughter! — in the role. How does it fare in the longer format? Will the lead still be a self-centered jerk? Is there any hope of a character as funny as Jack Black’s from the film? We’ll find out together when the series premieres on Hulu on February 14th.

New Movies We’ve Never Heard Of

Radioflash

Streaming services thrive on reliable older content and high profile new arrivals, but each month also sees the appearance of brand new movies that neither you nor we even knew existed. Radioflash (2019) arrives on February 14th, costars Will Patton and Dominic Monaghan, and appears to be a survival thriller of sorts about people struggling after an EMP blast kills power across the land. Is it any good? I don’t know, but a girl goes underwater at some point to use a phone (per the photo above) so I’m all in. Fans of last year’s Harpoon (2019) might want to check out Alive (2019) from the same director, Rob Grant. Is it as good as his darkly funny ocean-set thriller? No clue as this is the first I’m hearing of it, but I’ll definitely be giving it a spin as it involves a couple trapped in an abandoned sanitarium.

Horrors!

Cabin In The Woods
Lionsgate

Anyone looking for a fast, scary, and bloody horror movie fix can’t do much better than Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later (2002) which sees Cillian Murphy wake up in a post-apocalyptic London after a “rage virus” outbreak. Call it a zombie flick if you want — I don’t care — just acknowledge that it’s among the best thanks to some terrifying set-pieces, horrifying action beats, and some nerve-shredding scenes. It seems every great movie goes through an inexplicable backlash period, but I was still a bit shook when some numbnuts did it with Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods (2012). The movie remains horror/comedy perfection delivering thrills, big laughs, gore, and an absolutely aces premise. Horror fans looking for older, more gothic thrills should give Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter (1974) a go as he fights fanged terrors with his steel blade. It’s solid Hammer fun.

Franchise Fun!

Vegas Vacation

Sometimes you’re in the mood for more than just one movie, and while you could jump around and watch different films there’s an appeal to settling in for a bigger, grander story spread across several. Two such opportunities are landing this month, and while neither franchise is great necessarily, they’re definitely streaming on Hulu. First up is the Renee Zellweger led trilogy about a single woman making her way through life, love, and the contents of her fridge. Bridget Jones Diary (2001), Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004), and Bridget Jone’s Baby (2016) offer varying amounts of laughs, and while I’m partial to the first two as they co-star Hugh Grant I’m sure someone out there loves the third as well. Less discerning comedy fans will want to settle in for National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983), National Lampoon’s European Vacation (1985), National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989), and Vegas Vacation (1997). One of those four movies is legit great!
