Amazon Prime is the only streaming service with a cost that also gets you free shipping, and that my friends is a deal. They’re in the Original programming game, but their biggest offering remains the ton of films available to watch anytime for Prime members.

The complete list of titles hitting Amazon Prime this month — March 2019 — is below, but first I’m going to shower some affection and point some eyeballs towards a few specific titles.

Amazon Prime Pick of the Month

Denzel Washington is deservedly regarded as a fantastic actor, but he’s become just as well known in recent years for his action/thrillers. The Magnificent Seven (2016), The Equalizer (2015), 2 Guns (2013), Safe House (2012), Unstoppable (2010), The Book of Eli (2010)… the list goes on. If you follow it all the way book you’ll reach his sixth feature film and his very first action/thriller, The Mighty Quinn (1989). It’s less refined than many that followed, but the movie is great fun with some solid suspense beats, entertaining character work, and an eye-catching setting. Washington’s charisma was off the charts even then.

Tasty Spaghetti Westerns

A Man Called Blade

A handful of spaghetti westerns are hitting Amazon this month, and while they’re not necessarily cream of the crop it’s always fun doing a deep dive on genre fare. Lone and Angry Man (1965) is a revenge tale about a man named Shenandoah, and honestly that’s enough reason to watch right there. A Sky Full of Stars for a Roof (1968) sees a pair of drifters come together as wary companions, but the angry mob on their tail seems destined to break up the budding friendship. Come for the interesting title, stay for the Ennio Morricone score. The Four of the Apocalypse (1975) is the only one of these four that I’ve actually seen, and while it’s because the legendary Lucio Fulci directed it I’m happy to say it’s a good one. Sergio Martino is nearly every bit the legend, and his A Man Called Blade (1977) pits a rough and tumble bounty hunter against outlaws who apparently aren’t all that bright.

Amazon Originals

Cold War

You may not have heard of Cold War (premieres March 22nd), but you’ve most definitely heard of the Academy Awards — and it was nominated for three of them last month. Does that make it a great movie? Not necessarily, but it along with its near unanimous critical praise is a pretty strong indicator. Fans of romance, period pieces, and short running times (89 minutes!) should give it a spin. 2011’s Hanna is a solidly entertaining tale of a young girl raised to be a bad-ass who’s put to the test when nasty government agents come looking for her and her father. It’s pretty great, and you should watch it. If you’d prefer a longer take on the tale, though, then Amazon has you covered with its new remake as a series. Hanna – Season 1 premieres March 29th.

Gooey Italian Horrors

The New York Ripper

I’ve yet to see Let Sleeping Corpse Lie (1974), but it has a hell of a title which means I’ll be watching it this month. By contrast, Dario Argento’s Deep Red (1975) is not only the best of the giallo master’s filmography but also one of the greatest genre films period. A strong mystery, a sharp script, a killer Goblin score, and some of Argento’s most assured direction make for an absolute classic. Lucio Fulci has three films hitting Amazon, and all three are worthy of a watch or re-watch. City of the Living Dead (1980) sees some poor shmucks trying in vain to close the gates of hell while dealing with all manner of grisly and gory shenanigans. The Black Cat (1981) has liberal fun with Edgar Allan Poe’s story and sees a madman using his pet to wreak bloody havoc. And finally, The New York Ripper (1982) arrives as one of Fulci’s most infamous films complete with sheer barbarity, graphic cruelty, and lots of screaming women.
