Amazon Prime is the only streaming service with a cost that also gets you free shipping, and that my friends is a deal. They’re in the Original programming game, but their biggest offering remains the ton of films available to watch anytime for Prime members.

The complete list of titles hitting Amazon Prime this month — February 2019 — is below, but first I’m going to shower some affection and point some eyeballs towards a few specific titles.

Amazon Prime Pick of the Month

Dan Gilroy’s Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) is making a splash this month on a different streaming service, and regardless of the film’s actual quality one of its undeniable highlights is seeing the great and underappreciated Rene Russo. It’s worth a watch, but as we’re here to talk about Prime movies I’m going to insist you watch something else first — John McTiernan’s excellent and superior remake The Thomas Crown Affair (1999). Russo plays opposite Pierce Brosnan as an investigator falling in sync and love with his millionaire art thief. It’s a smart, sexy thriller with one hell of a re-watchable third act set-piece.

You Know, for Teens!

Every Day

Every Day (2018) lands on the 25th, and it’s far better than its quick ride in and out of theaters suggests. It’s about a teen who wakes up each day in the body and life of a completely different person and his effort to stay in contact with the girl he loves, and in addition to avoiding easy answers it also moves effortlessly through bodies both male and female, of different races, and of varying degrees of “traditional” attractiveness. Its message is a pretty great one. The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet (2013) arrives on the 28th, and while it lacks an equally engaging theme or narrative it is from director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie, 2001) meaning it’s at least worth a watch. I’ve yet to actually see Sisters of Death (1976), but the premise seems promising enough as a sorority initiation goes awry leaving the survivors targeted by a pissed off relative of the girl they left for dead. It’s a super familiar genre premise, but hey, why fix what ain’t broken.

The Highs and Lows of New Adaptations

Last Of The Mohicans

Some novels make their way to the screen once, while others manage the journey several times, and two examples of the latter are hitting Prime this month. First up is Michael Mann’s thrilling and lyrical adaptations of James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans (1992). Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, and Wes Studi star, and it’s an eminently re-watchable experience — seriously, if you can turn off that third act foot chase before it’s done you’re either a stronger person than me or a complete asshole. The other end of the spectrum sees Eli Roth’s Death Wish (2018) shooting up the place starting on the 23rd. I’d say the Brian Garfield novel finds new life on the screen, but Bruce Willis’ performance is so lifeless that the result is as dull and predictable a revenge thriller as you’ve ever seen.
