What’s New to Stream on Amazon Prime for August 2019

August's offerings include blockbusters, forgotten gems, and something called '#IMomSoHard.'
Amazon Prime August

Amazon Prime is the only streaming service with a cost that also gets you free shipping, and that my friends is a deal. They’re in the Original programming game, but their biggest offering remains the ton of films available to watch anytime for Prime members.

The complete list of titles hitting Amazon Prime this month — August 2019 — is below, but first I’m going to shower some affection and point some eyeballs towards a few specific titles.

Amazon Prime Pick of the Month

Paul Feig’s filmography leans decidedly comedic with the action/comedy gem Spy (2015) as a fantastic example of his sensibilities and talent, but just as that film delivers on the action front he’s shown a steady interest in blending genres. A Simple Favor (2019) arrives on the 21st and brings with it a comedy that trades big laughs for fun story beats and turns. People who love it seem to really love it, and there are a lot of them as it grossed nearly $100 million on a budget 1/5 of that. Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively are the big names here, and it’s a film destined for re-watches by fans and first watches by fans to be.

New to me Horror

I watch a lot of movies, and while I enjoy all genres my interests typically lead me towards horror. While I’ve seen more horror movies than many people, though, I’ve still missed nearly as many over the decades. Happily, genre labels and streaming sites like Prime make it easy to play catch up, and this month’s promising new arrival is Successive Slidings of Pleasure (1974) — aka Glissements Progressifs du Plaisir in its native tongue — which slides into view starting on the 31st. A “fantasy, horror, thriller” from 1970s France, the movie is about a young woman whose roommate is viciously murdered leading police to suspect her of the crime. A very brief Google search reveals hints of witchcraft, saucy nuns, and nude body painting, so yeah, I’ll probably be giving it a spin to see if the movie holds up to the promise of the title.

For Fans of Carnivals and Rows

Prime’s original series haven’t exactly set the world ablaze, but that appears to be changing in recent months. Jack Ryan is a good action fun, last month’s The Boys is absolute brilliance, and now August brings a period tale of a human detective and a human-sized fairy working together to stop a monster. Carnival Row‘s first season drops on the 30th, and while neither Orlando Bloom not Cara Delevingne have previously proven themselves as having much in the way of charisma I’m hoping the intriguing blend of genres might help pick up their slack.
