The Princess of Power will be rebooted on the streaming service.
The 80s just keep coming back in a big way. This week, it has been announced that Princess Adora is heading back to the small screen courtesy of Netflix and Dreamworks Animation. New episodes of She-Ra: Princess of Power will be premiering sometime in 2018.
She-Ra was first conceived as Prince Adam/He-Man’s sister, in a very binary attempt to appeal to girls after the latter became a hit for boys in both the toy store and onscreen. While He-Man: Masters of the Universe was developed after the original Mattel toy line, She-Ra was directly created in collaboration with Filmation to corner both TV and toy markets. She-Ra: Princess of Power follows Princess Adora (voiced by Melendy Britt) and a group of freedom fighters known as the Great Rebellion as they fight for the freedom of Eternia, which is ruled by the tyrannical Hordak. Kidnapped as a baby, Adora was raised away from her twin brother Adam. Although Adora was later rescued by him, she vowed to return to Eternia to lead the Great Rebellion as She-Ra.
Earlier this month, David S. Goyer was tapped to develop a film adaptation of Masters of the Universe, and at the time, it already felt like a She-Ra related announcement would adequately fit alongside it. Lumberjanes co-creator Noelle Stevenson has boarded the new Princess of Power series as showrunner, and the animated production is envisioned as a reboot to the 1985 show. Here’s the official synopsis of the new She-Ra series:
“The trailblazing girl power icon originally debuted in 1985 to satisfy overwhelming demand for a female lead fantasy series. With Stevenson’s unique voice at the helm, fans are in store for an epic and timely tale that celebrates female friendship and empowerment, lead by a warrior princess tailor-made for today.”
She-Ra will join the ranks of other Dreamworks series that are currently in development at Netflix. This includes shows based on Trolls and The Boss Baby, a new adaptation of Captain Underpants, an adventure series titled Harvey Street Kids, the third and final season of Guillermo Del Toro’s Trollhunters and spin-off sci-fi show 3 Below.
