This is going to scare the hell out of you for far different reasons.
Remember that sketch that appeared on SNL around Halloween time last year? The one with Tom Hanks dressed up in a bizarre Halloween suit and two skeletons by his side? That sketch, known as Haunted Elevator, introduced the world to David S. Pumpkins. You may also know what it means to take something relatively popular and then kill it by oversaturating the market? With the endless amounts of memes and variations of David S. Pumpkins, it became a little too much to bear. According to Variety, NBC is looking to kill the David S. Pumpkins meme with its new half-hour animated special.
Tom Hanks will reprise his role as David S. Pumpkins and he will be joined by Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage who will lend his voice for the special. The greatness of David S. Pumpkins depends on who exactly you ask about it. If someone has never heard of the character, chances are the Haunted Elevator sketch is going to be their new favorite thing for a couple of hours. If someone had happened to be on Facebook or Twitter when the sketch originally aired, well it’s probably better off as a memory instead of something that needs a continuation.
Which is a shame because NBC also wants Hanks back on SNL for the Halloween season. It has already been confirmed that he will be appearing in character once again and chances are it will be a slight variation of his fan-favorite character.
What exactly will this half-hour special contain? There’s no news on that front yet, but chances are David S. Pumpkins will be asking if there are any questions.
The David S. Pumpkins animated special will air on NBC October 28th.
