Natalie Portman has lined up a new project. She will join the Brady Corbet film Vox Lux as a pop music superstar who has conquered all odds. She replaces Rooney Mara, who was initially up for the role. Now Portman will have to showcase the vocal talent she teased years ago, as she and co-star Jude Law will be signing a soundtrack of original songs by Sia.

Portman and Law previously co-starred together in the 2004 drama Closer, which brought her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. That was when we first got a glimpse into Portman’s future, provided the promise that she was going to be notable for more than just playing Queen Amidala in Star Wars. Since then, she’s won an Academy Award for her lead performance in in Black Swan and another Best Actress nomination for Jackie.

Vox Lux is one of many roles Portman has lined up. She will next be seen in Alex Garland’s Annihilation and then has Xavier Dolan’s The Death and Life of John F. Donovan on the way. She also recently signed on to Noah Hawley’s Pale Blue Dot, but Vox Lux will start first as principal photography is expected to begin next week.

According to Variety, Vox Lux might have been put on the back burner if fortunes hadn’t turned around for Bold Films. They recently released the Jake Gyllenhaal film Stronger to a muted response, and not helping matters, despite once having a lot of awards buzz the film ended up receiving zero Oscar nominations.

Since then, Bold Films was success in signing a domestic deal for the Keira Knightley feature Colette at the Sundance Film Festival. That acquisition and the appeal of Portman now joining Vox Lux has reinvigorated the company.
